Come play with the qathet Fiddlers!
The qathet Fiddlers are a small but mighty group of young musicians playing traditional and contemporary fiddle music.
Join us! qathet Fiddlers rehearse on Wednesdays 3:30pm to 5:15pm and are open to enthusiastic kids 8 to 20 years old. Players will ideally have at least 2 years experience and have taken private lessons to establish good technique. We have players across a range of skill levels and our arrangements accommodate intermediate to advanced violinists. Fiddle is an aural tradition and we learn all our tunes by ear - sight reading ability not required, but is helpful for the more advanced players.
qathet Fiddlers All Ages!
What: A beginner oriented fiddle group for kids and adults. Kids aged 4-10 require an accompanying adult who will ALSO be learning the fiddle. Accompanying adults do not pay tuition.
When: Wednesdays, 5:15-6:00pm (see below for exact dates)
Where: Wildwood, qathet
Who: Laura Wallace, leader of the qathet Fiddlers, will be leading the class
Tuition: Spring Session 1: April 2- May 7 $120. Spring Session 2: May 28-June 18 $80.
What you need: a violin! Violin rentals are available through Good Vibrations Strings (that’s us too!). Please fill out a rental form. This class requires an adult to learn alongside the younger fiddler, so you need a violin too! You don’t need to know anything about the violin or fiddle music.
Class details and philosophy:
Fiddle music is primarily taught by ear. We start with the basics and slowly learn more complex tunes as we go. We require adults to learn alongside because the best way to get your kid to practice is to practice with them. We encourage building up a habit, starting with 5 minutes a day.
Arrive anytime after 5pm, and hear a few tunes from our advanced fiddlers, who will be finishing their jam. It is important to hear the tunes and start playing along (even just on open strings) right away, to get that music in your bones! Each day will be a little different, but we’ll always be learning something new and reviewing old tunes. We might learn a new technique, play some games, and as the kids get squirrelly they’ll sometimes head off to play some music games while the adults and older kids start learning more complex tunes.
We will be teaching all the music by ear, and you will have access to videos and audio tracks for helping with practice at home.
qathet Fiddlers All Ages: Registration Form
Our main qathet fiddlers group is only open to kids age 8-20, and we hope that some of these beginner kids will eventually move up to the main group. We will continue to have our All Ages group so the adults can keep playing too!
Meanwhile…..
Where can you hear us? Fiddle music is the original party music! You can find us sharing music around the community at local events and markets.
